South England Easter Conference 2009

SEEC has been held every year over the Easter weekend since 1980. It is organised by the Chinese Overseas Christian Mission (COCM) and is catered mainly, though not exclusively, for university students and young adults from a Chinese background. It offers an opportunity for the participants to explore the Christian faith as well as a friendly atmosphere to meet people from all over southern England (and beyond) and as such, Christians and non-Christians are welcomed. The program at SEEC includes talks by speakers from UK and abroad, workshops on various topics, worship through music, meditation, games, discussions and the sharing of thoughts. The 2009 conference is co-hosted by the Chinese Congregation, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London and COCM.

The theme for SEEC 2009 is Transformer and the main talks and devotional talks will centre around the theme verse

"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will" Romans 12:2

English Devotional Talk 1- The Lord’s Return must motivate us to discipline our minds for prayer– Andrew Muwowo

INTRODUCTION

The conference theme this year is ‘ Not to conform any longer to the pattern of this world’ ( Rom.12:2 ). In order not to conform any longer to the pattern of this world  our focus must be on The Lord’s return. Focussing on the second coming of Christ will take our minds off the pleasures of this world. Our Christian lives must be lived in the light of the impending consummation.

1 Peter 4:7
As we await The Lord’s return, let us be in the right frame of mind in order to pray. The battle on prayer is fought in the mind. Christians ought therefore to keep their heads, and not be carried away by self-indulgence or excitement. Fasting can be of help to be mentally alert in prayer. In prayer we show our dependence on God. When we are engaged in prayer our minds are occupied with God, we therefore cannot be worldly at the same time. Prayer therefore helps us not to conform any longer to the pattern of this world.

In the parable of the ten virgins ( Mat.25:1-13 ) we are reminded to be watchful because we do not know when the bridegroom is going to come. The visible church is a mixed body. Not every one who says Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. We must have a faith that is genuine. If we are genuine then we shall be watchful. We shall not be taken by surprise by Christ’s second coming. We shall watch and pray.

In the early church many Christians were expecting The Lord Jesus to come for the second time ( e.g. 1 & 2 Thessalonians ). Prayer was very close to their lips. ( 1 Thes.5:25 ).  Indulgence in the flesh was not entertained.

English Devotional Talk 2- The Lord’s Emminent Return must motivate us to love other believers– Andrew Muwowo

1 Peter 4: 8-9
When The Lord Jesus comes, Christians from different parts of the world will together worship Him. As His return is obvious, we ought to give priority to active expression of love for one another. After all we are the royal priesthood, God’s holy nation. We should be ready to show hospitality to Christians we do not even know in person. We cannot claim to love God if we do not love other Christians from different nationalities. In 1 Cor.13:4-7 love is defined. Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant.

As believers we ought to submit to one another out of love. Some of theses believers are in our homes, we should love these too.
Some Christians are being persecuted for their faith in different parts of this world. They are entitled to be loved too.
Missionaries serving the Lord on planet earth covet our love.
In a local church setting there is need to build a multicultural church. A church that has ethnic, gender, age, and social class diversity and yet people feel they belong to the church. There is need to love all saints. Love covers a multitude of sins. When we are preoccupied with love for the Christian we will not conform to the patterns of this world.

The church at Thessalonica was very expectant of The Lord’s return. Their love for each other was amazing.  ( 2 Thes.1:3 ). 1 John 3 and 4 has some very challenging statements on loving other Christians. For example 1 John 3:17 reminds us that love is practical. In 1 John 4:8,20 there is the challenge that we cannot claim to love God when we fail to love others.
